বঙ্গোপসাগরের লঘুচাপটি ভারতের ছত্রিশগড় ও তৎসংলগ্ন এলাকায় অবস্থান করছে। এর প্রভাবে পটুয়াখালীর কুয়াকাটা সংলগ্ন বঙ্গোপসাগর বেশ উত্তাল রয়েছে। পূর্ণিমার কারণে জোয়ারের প্রভাবে নদীর পানির উচ্চতা ২ থেকে ৩ ফুট বৃদ্ধি পেয়েছে।
আবহাওয়া অফিস জানান, উপকূলীয় এলাকা দিয়ে যেকোনো সময় ঝোড়ো হাওয়া বয়ে যেতে পারে।
এ কারণে পটুয়াখালীর পায়রাসহ সব বন্দরে ৩ নম্বর স্থানীয় সতর্কসংকেত বহাল থাকছে। একই সঙ্গে মাছধরা ট্রলারগুলোকে নিরাপদ আশ্রয়ে থাকতে বলা হয়েছে।
বৃহস্পতিবার (১১ আগস্ট) পর্যন্ত দুই দফা অস্বাভাবিক জোয়ারে ভাঙা বেড়িবাঁধ দিয়ে পানি প্রবেশ করে তলিয়ে গেছে নিম্নাঞ্চলসহ উপজেলার অর্ধশতাধিক গ্রাম।
পটুয়াখালী জেলা আবহাওয়া অফিসের ভারপ্রাপ্ত কর্মকর্তা মাহবুবা সুখী জানান, নদীর পানির উচ্চতা আরও বৃদ্ধি পাওয়ার সম্ভাবনা রয়েছে। একই সঙ্গে উপকূলীয় এলাকায় ঝোড়ো বাতাস বয়ে যাওয়ার সম্ভাবনা রয়েছে। তবে আগামী ৭২ ঘণ্টা এ অবস্থা চলমান থাকবে।
